Alle mine værker, bliver derfor lavet i min fritid.

The Jury says: A very skilfully made
portrait painted in sparse colours. The eyes
penetrate your very soul and are even a bit
scary. The different textures are painted
successfully in this vignette, where the
blurred edge at the chest area gives a good
fading into the background. The light is
handled very well.

First place: Farmyard in blue,
by Ole Hedeager The Jury says: Excellent portrayal of the Bull. Interesting use of colour and shading makes him look 3D. The Chickens are also well done and well placed to make a pleasing composition. Wonderful how the cow „looms* over the chickens, and the
viewpoint is an unusual birdsview – from a chicken on the ground!

'Endearing pose and quite natural. Very good
draughtsmanship . Very nice piece. The slant

'Classic portrait - in a quiet palette
- good drawing style. Excellent
handing of the medium and tonal
approach but lovely. Great to see
such delicate use of pastel,
almost like silverpoint. The
drawing is accurately rendered;
the artist has a lovely touch which
suits the subject. Excellent use of
the drawing aspect of pastelling.'

The Pastel Scribbler August 2011
Tell us a little about yourself, your
career back ground and how art fits into
I am 43 years old and live in the
beautiful village of Klovborg in the
countryside in Denmark.
I am a qualified primary school teacher
who specialises in Art. I am a public
school teacher and so all my artwork is
done in my spare time. I hope that in the
future I can teach only in art and drawing
and supplement my income with my own
production of art.
So, to get a little more foothold as an
artist it is my goal to make myself even
more known by winning contests like this
one. But also to try to win some of them
where you can win money. Additionally, I
intend to make an exhibition later this year
with my pastel drawings, to promote the
pastel medium and myself in Denmark.
However, I am a perfectionist and I
have a long way to go before I'm as good
as I want to be. That I won this
competition I feel is the first goal on my
long road to be a good pastellist. However
I am proud of this achievement.
I consider myself (as most artists did in
the old days), a craftsman.
I see you do lots of portraits and
caricatures. Please tell us about your
interest in the Human face. What draws
you to portrait work?
I have drawn and painted portraits /
caricatures all my life and the study of
faces, shapes and colors has been an
obsession for me, which manifests itself in
a need to express myself in colours and
lines. Portrait drawing and caricature
especially has always interested me. I have
not really received any training and
courses in it, but am self-taught.
Therefore where the challenge lies for
me is in reproducing a personality or a
twinkle in the eye. For me personally, the
human face is perhaps the most difficult
subject to draw, and I do not think that I
will ever finish studying this, so I am also
fascinated by drawing it.
Funnily enough, I feel that I do portraits
best (realistic), but I've got an incredible
following inquiry after my caricatures,
perhaps because in Denmark there are not
very many who are doing this.
The work itself with caricatures is fun,
but also more tiring to work with, because
you have to reinterpret the motives for
something almost completely different and
spot people's personalities. All in all, it is
important to exaggerate a personality
without exaggerating so much that people
Are there other subjects which have
captured your interest?
I draw and paint in several media,
especially pastels on velour paper, which
has recently caught my interest. I also find
animal subjects especially interesting
lately. Partly because I have not drawn
animals before, but also because they are
so different from people's faces.
Beyond this I have found out that they
are easier to sell as separate images and
can see that here too there is a big demand
here in Denmark because there are not
many who do these subjects and especially
How and when did you discover
pastels as a fine art medium? Can you
explain why it is that you like to use
I only started to use pastels 6 months
ago and I feel I have taken a big leap since
my start with this medium. In the
draw on plain paper with them and the
result was mildly terrifying! So I threw
them away. Recently I discovered, by
chance on the net, a stunning portrait done
in pastels. I had to make one just like it!
So I have been trying to get as much
knowledge as possible about this (Thanks
Google ..). I realized the importance of the
right paper and the right materials. So after
trying several kinds of paper, I feel that I
am doing better. Velour especially is
delicious to use and Derwent pastel
Especially, there are not many places in
Danish (books etc) where you can learn
how to work with pastels. So what I have
learned I can thank the net for.
In France and the UK, for example,
pastels are widely recognised as an art
medium although they often take a back
seat to other media. In other European
countries pastels and pastellists are
virtually unknown. How do you see the
situation in Denmark regarding
awareness and appreciation of pastels?
Pastel, or drawing on pastel paper, as I
said is not very common in Denmark. I
think there are several reasons. It is
difficult to work with (initially). There are
not many who use it (not as much prestige
as working with oil paint). There is not
much special knowledge and proven
knowledge about this in Danish and media
in general. There is simply no tradition
here in this medium. It's a little harder to
sell. One has to look far for someone who
actually sells the right pastels and pastel
paper (I find my material on the web).
I think, without knowing for sure, that
pastel is a medium on the march. To be
honest though, I think we were brought up (in
Denmark) to believe that art
is anything with oil on a canvas.
I will work on pastel
becoming more widely
known and recognized.
